I disagree. I think the incentive to arrange marriages and ensure a mutually beneficial propagation of two families' hereditary lines predates the religious overtones now associated with it. It's a pragmatic and reasonable enterprise that was adopted by religious institutions and because much of human history has been utterly dominated by religious institutions, the practice is now wrongfully associated with "fanatical insanity."
Well of course there will still be success stories in a random, chaotic universe just by sheer chance. The whole idea of arranged marriages is to increase the odds of replicating your success in a methodical, systematically reproducible manner.
