Any jurisdiction can have a different outcome but case law is still case law. Also, the law holds human life more valuable than any given dog's life.

Unfortunately in many localities, discharge of a weapon for any reason is unlawful and they will arrest you. You have to prove that you had no other choice but to shoot, and depending on the DA that could be in court. They would love to make an example of someone.

If you carry at all I would recommend one of the concealed carry insurances like USCCA (there are many out there but only like 2 or 3 good ones).

I keep my dog on a leash, but she has gotten away occasionally. I would hope that someone would not shoot her. She is not a pitbull or resembling a pitbull. She definitely does not attack strangers, but she would definitely run up to them to play with them. usually she stops before she actually gets to them. However it depends on the person's response.

Pitbulls are special exceptions and their owners know it.
Pitbulls deserve more fear and less trust then a Jack Russell, for the same reason you run from a bull but not a cat.
