Agent orange was used by the military to kill off plants in Vietnam. Turns out it wasn't great for soldiers either. Cancer, skins conditions, etc. It was extremely rapidly acting so it was useful for neutralizing guerilla tactics. DDT was a pesticide that turned out to weaken the eggshells of the birds who ate any insects affected by the chemical. They'd become so fragile they wouldn't survive until the chick could. So, lots of baby bird abortions.
