My wife works for a big company and they spend a LOT of $$ on ironclad contracts, because this kind of shit is the tip of the iceberg with a bad contract.
I have no pity for these businesses. They made the contract.
The idea of a stand up meeting is for everyone to really briefly summarise their work from the previous day/week. It makes it harder for someone who doesn't do any work to hide their inactivity and it makes it more obvious if there's a part of the project coming under pressure.
The "stand up" part means everyone is literally standing so there's no room for anyone to get comfy in a nice chair and talk until lunchtime.
"It makes it harder for someone who doesn't do any work to hide their inactivity"
No it teaches lazy people to become bullshit artists who lie and gaslight their shit onto other team members.
It's also a chance for the wind bags to waste an hour of my morning talking in circles over their empty thoughts, just so in the next call the manager can bitch about how behind everyone is
Meetings are a waste of time to justify management's existence

As above, that's up to the manager to do something about, or not. Stand up meetings are an opportunity to put such people on the spot. The meeting won't run itself any more than a table saw will build a house on it's own.

That's the point of stand up meetings, even wind bags get tired and want to keep things short when they're physically standing in one place. Also, as above, it's the manager's job to keep meetings on topic. Meetings are only worth as much as the person chairing them.

fucking trade school in melbourne for a non football fan... dude, i get up at 6am to be here to learn about electrical shit not for these dopey cunts to talk about the football results until 11am. Sill get up at 10am instead and drive the non peak hour drive instead.
I started with the family trade 20 years ago in the construction industry and worked in vic and qld. I moved onto different work, but much of my family continued. To the best of their ability. The divide between quality tradies and poor quality grows every year. The demand for good quality tradies goes down as the demand for cheap rubbish construction goes up. And the number of complaints about completed houses and the like is through the roof and into the moons ass.
Theoretically, actually though those are just a waste of time. It's the new TPS report.
It always ends up in comfy chairs and drags on, (unless one just leaves)
The verbally skilled can make anything sound like work, and keep a consistent story, so there's not really any way to tell. But now they have to spend time lying to you.
Companies that hire smart people and get out of their way are productive.
All that other process overhead is just out of fear and for shifting blame.
Sure. Like I said though meetings can be really productive in ways emails can't. For example, if I wanted to have a proper discussion about an aspect of a project that's failing, and three different engineers needed to be involved, there'd be a huge gap between responses and one person might be busy doing something else, then have to catch up on an hour's worth of back and forth.
Whereas if you get them in the same room they might work it out in 20 minutes.
It's also easier to hide behind emails and delay responses or come back with vague answers they know won't be challenged for another few hours/days.
I walked out on a room full of about 40 indians who had started filtering in about an hour after they were meant to arrive and too late for me to start after i had had to clean fuckin cobwebs out of their damn room, only for me to tell them 'well unfortunately we are now 45 minutes late and i have another job that runs into this one, youll need to call the office and rebook the class for a more appropriate time so you can be here at once.' promptly packed up my shit and left and went home. There was no other job, but thats neither their business nor relevant, i still got paid the full rate for being there, set up, and ready to go on time, they would have had to repay the deposit.
copped an earful from the boss but i didnt get fired over it. rude pricks.
also fun is showing up to a nondescript residential home with a massive security door, knocking for ten minutes, getting a guy who had rolled out of bed shirtless and yewning.. 'oh yeah thats today ey... go sit in there' points at the kitchen and makes a bowl of fucken cornflakes.
I learned that day people rent out living rooms and shit... somewhere.... as 'temporary meeting rooms' for small groups of all sorts....
If they tell you what time to be there it’s a w2 job not 1099. This guy is right to tell them to fuck off as a contractor. His only obligation is his contract.

Yeah, being self employed for me means many headaches, many bosses, often more hours or less pay- but FUCK it feels good to be able to fire a shitty client.

Nobody gives a shit about your ego, if you can't get an email update across you've got communication issues, not the other party.
Guffaw.
