The problem wasn't so much the people but the admin. Although when AOU's behavior was especially ridiculous, he had a little squad of bootlickers that deserve all of the contempt you can spare for anonymous online people. Of course, they'll hide behind different usernames and possibly already do.

Shortly after voat dying the original founder turned over more and more control to a controversial powermod called AOU. Around a year later AOU announced the founder had died and he was now in full control of the site.

Debate continues on who exactly AOU is and whether he's a fed or just someone with OCD who feels the need to micromanage other people's conversations.
