Billy Connolly on deep fried jam sandwiches -- yes, this is a real thing

submitted by HughBriss to whatever 3.4 yearsJan 15, 2022 14:32:44 ago (+5/-0)     (whatever)

I'm reading his book "Made in Scotland", in which he briefly ruminates on Scottish cuisine:

"Food has always been a major bone of contention when people talk about Scotland. I think it’s fair to say that we don’t have the very best culinary reputation in the world. The Scottish sweet tooth is a legendary thing and critics allege there is a great desire in Scotland to deep-fry any food that is left hanging around. I’ve never actually seen a deep-fried Mars Bar or Bounty, although I did once see them advertised in a chip shop. However, I confess that I have had a deep-fried jam sandwich, and I can report back that it was delicious."

I've heard of the deep fried Mars Bar, but not the jam sandwich. Man, that's so bizarre. I love the Scots, but they're kind of weird.

Oatmeal, oat cakes, porridge, oats in haggis.

In his dictionary, Johnson defined oats as such: "Oats. A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people." It's always been a poor country and very little will grow there. No surprise they ate a lot of oats.

Raw oats are really time consuming to cook. Before modern quick oats (parboiled and dried oats), boiling oats took a long time to soften them enough to make them edible. Quick oats was a godsend for mothers who were getting their children fed and ready for the day. Now it's just something we take for granted.

Oats should be well soaked for days before cooking

Yes, Scots really do love deep frying everything. It’s a great way to get extra calories that you need to face the harsh highlands. Scots are a tough but hearty people, reflecting their origins. High caloric food was well suited to their surroundings and lifestyle. They then brought their culinary practices to the south of USA, the “soul food” is originally White and Scottish, NOT black.

Scots will unfortunately deep fry anything and everything.

The Scots introduced smoked Salmon to the world. The Scots have some amazing seafood.

It’s a Nordic thing. You can literally toss a store to Norway from Scotland

Nice. I didn't know that. Last week I drove to Newport Beach (I live in California) just to by smoked salmon. I've been going to the same place for years because it's worth both the trip and the loyalty. It seems salmon farming is big in Scotland(Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull had salmon farms there).

He is a fucking legend. He never had sets, bits, or anything like that. Sometimes he'd make a few notes on topics he wanted to talk about, but it was all impromptu and spontaneous. That's the way he always did it. If it struck him as funny, he'd talk about it. He never did the same show twice. That is indeed legendary.

If you're a fan of Craig Ferguson, you can see he works the same way. His monologues were never scripted. The producer would just block out some time and he'd wing it, and would always be hilarious.

I'm watching his concerts right now. I was surprised at HOW MUCH he's done. So many shows. I particularly like his "World Tour of Scotland", where he travels to different locales and enjoys the people's hospitality and the beauty of the land. He genuinely loves Scotland and her people.

I mean, you can deep fry anything. Deep fried ice cream is a thing, for instance.

As Sluggy Freelance proved, deep frying is an even better food technique than adding garlic butter.
