Very cool. Didn't know I needed to see that but I did.

What's funny about the satellite imagery on the globe earth is that they're clearly products of post production that has been superimposed onto a 3D model via CGI.

Seeing something that large on this scale tends to resituate things in your worldview, especially when you make something that large small with respect to the earth itself. You realize something that has been cataclysmic and 'Biblical' for humanity from its beginning is really like a zit-popping on the planet. Maybe that's underestimating it a bit (there are super-volcanos after all).

But it also makes you realize how little about these kinds of periodic processes we know about, not just on earth but in the solar system. Strange ways the sun suddenly comes into coherence with earth and induces electromagnetic effects. We are just beginning to grasp that these things exist, let alone understanding their causes and potential to sweep humanity aside like dust.

Shit is humbling. It also makes you think about histories we have no clue about; possible advanced civilizations that were just wiped out of the geological record. We think we are some zenith in all of it, but we might be a blip on the radar. That's enough 10th grader daydreaming for now.

The sound was incredible. Notice in the satellite timelapse how the blast made clouds condense as the shockwave passed. People 2000 miles away in Australia and New Zealand heard it like rolling thunder.

No wonder Tonda didn't get far. SO much from Tongans. THey CHOSE. guess they had some GOOD days before the big one didn't they. Maybe this is payback.
