Dammit. I wish I could remember the name of the series or the author. It was a 20-some entry series on the entire development of that culture. One odd commonality I remember was that many of the famous musicians of that era had parents who were high-ranking military/intelligence.

This series I mentioned was honestly one of the most in-depth pieces of less-than-book-length journalism I'd ever read.
