Brushed steel

[ - ] cyclops1771 7 points 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 20:35:27 ago (+7/-0)

I kinda like it as it sits, no pick guard.

[ - ] Rotteuxx [op] 7 points 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 21:26:10 ago (+7/-0)

How about a lazer etched niggerfaggot instead?

Hmm.... Both are great. I think the purple heart contrasts more nicely against the metal body. Put the copper on a black guitar though, that would look good.

[ - ] Feelsgood 4 points 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 22:11:05 ago (+4/-0)

Looks gorgeous. How is the intonation with the strings in place?

Purple heart is wonderful because of the slow and dense growth. I wonder if manufacturers avoid it because of simply the "tone", or the cost.

/It looks like a work of art.

[ - ] CHIRO 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 22:52:08 ago (+1/-0)

That's an interesting question. Purpleheart really isn't prohibitively expensive, at least not for fingerboards and maybe not entire necks. I really don't know why it wasn't that popular. I know that the purple can fade with time due to UV light, so maybe it requires finishes to protect it in ways that rosewood doesn't. As far as tone, I've heard that rosewood is less dense than purpleheart and that's supposed to favor less overtones. I don't know how much stock I put in that, but it's a thought.

Sometimes it seems like certain things just happen in an industry too. Someone sets a standard and it just sticks, or maybe some historical reason made this that or the other thing unavailable at a key time. Maybe purpleheart was super rare to find back in the day.

I'll get to find out when I go buy a set :)

I love working with it but I don't think it's recognized as a tone wood though, it does have lots of great properties for it, if I'd be setup for proper woodworking I'd try it. It is expensive-ish also, manufacturers no likey...

/thanks

Purpleheart will look really good.

[ - ] Rotteuxx [op] 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 21:29:49 ago (+1/-0)

Most popular andwer I'm getting... i might just have to go against it!

[ - ] CHIRO 3 points 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 22:31:08 ago (+3/-0)

I agree with @heygeorge on this one. Just give in. Awesome work, man.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 22:50:39 ago (+1/-0)

I get the purple heart thing, I do. I'm just not into it. I love the grain and color of cocobolo.

[ - ] Cunt 2 points 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 02:55:13 ago (+2/-0)

PURPLE! Copper and silver are fine but purple and silver is a much better combo.

[ - ] Whatthefuck 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 16:11:00 ago (+1/-0)

Copper matches the feel better, purple heart is generally better looking. Can't go wrong with either.

I wonder more about how the tonality of that beauty is. I can't help but feel some warmth of the wood will be lost, but maybe it's worth the trade off?

What we really need is for you to string it up and play a few riffs.

You did an excellent job on that guitar, Rotteuxx. It's beautiful.

[ - ] Rotteuxx [op] 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 7, 2022 12:18:42 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks m8, putting the finishing touches on it by the end of next week hopefully.

[ - ] ButtToucha9000 2 points 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 23:05:05 ago (+2/-0)*

Purpleheart matches the neck better. Copper matches the body better. Either would look good. It looks blank and unfinished as it sits. Cutout f holes would be interesting as well.

What about a copper hole ring with a purple heart pick guard?

You could ring the pickup for an interesting accent as well

[ - ] Rotteuxx [op] 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 06:52:16 ago (+1/-0)

I love the copper hole ring idea, i might just go that route... not a pickup, it's a roller bridge.

[ - ] ButtToucha9000 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 15:46:01 ago (+1/-0)

What's a roller bridge? Sounds neat.

[ - ] Rotteuxx [op] 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 15:50:06 ago (+1/-0)

The Bigsby tailpiece is like a wawa bar so the strings need to sit on rollers to stretch without friction

[ - ] ButtToucha9000 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 7, 2022 01:27:54 ago (+1/-0)

This this is amazing. You made it yourself? How much something like this go for? You gotta post a sound video when it's complete I'd love to hear it

[ - ] Rotteuxx [op] 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 7, 2022 12:13:40 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks, yeah it's an experimental build. I've been making regular stainless acoustics for a while but still needed to refine the manufacturing process to toughen them up, which I did with this build on top of trying a Bigsby bridge for fun.

Here's one of the originals... 2nd or 3rd build, can't recall. All my guitars are based on a Martin design and 25.4 scale.

The price can vary a lot depending on options, esthetics & material costs. Let's say a very basic guitar like an Orchestral Model without a cutout, basic Gotoh tuners, cheap rosewood wood fretboard & bridge with a bolt-on mahogany neck would be roughly 2700$.

[ - ] ButtToucha9000 0 points 2.3 yearsJan 7, 2022 14:40:12 ago (+0/-0)

That is awesome I am very impressed. Craftsmanship and creation should be valued above all else

[ - ] lord_nougat 2 points 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 20:59:54 ago (+2/-0)

I think a galvanized steel pickguard might look cool.

[ - ] Rotteuxx [op] 6 points 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 21:29:00 ago (+6/-0)

Blasphemy!

Galvanized is the nigger of metal finishes. Can't miscegenate like that with brushed stainless, the Whitest of metals.

...but the contrast would be awesome!

[ - ] Le_Bucheron 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 10:06:44 ago (+1/-0)

Wow! I'm impressed! This is some criss de belle job man! My opinion for the pickguard... I'm not fond of the purpleheart. I would probably try to match the black of the whammy bar with shou sugi ban ash maybe or go full retard with a plate of damascus titanium. Anyway please post the final result when it's ready :)

[ - ] BadBoyBubby 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 07:44:17 ago (+1/-0)

I like it as it is though it would look pretty in copper as well. How to glue steel and copper together? On the other hand wooden finish will fit the neck.

[ - ] UncleDoug 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 05:49:37 ago (+1/-0)

Considering copper is reactive to a lot of other metals, I'd go the purple heart.

[ - ] boogienight 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 02:48:43 ago (+1/-0)

interesting whammy bar, looks like a bigsby but its not? Custom job?

[ - ] Rotteuxx [op] 0 points 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 06:54:38 ago (+0/-0)

Knock off bigsby, I always wanted to try a build like this but wasn't willing to spend on a real one in case it doesn't work out.

[ - ] drhitler 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 01:58:52 ago (+1/-0)

what a strange accoustic, can accoustic strings work with a whammy? electric strings are really stretchy for that but accoustic ones are a bit more rigid.

[ - ] Rotteuxx [op] 0 points 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 06:55:31 ago (+0/-0)

Finding out is part of the experiment :)

[ - ] Broc_Liath 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 6, 2022 00:57:13 ago (+1/-0)

Purpleheart, matches the stem better.

[ - ] beece 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 23:40:08 ago (+1/-0)

Fucking beauty. You need to ask those kinds of questions and trust the judgement to whomever got it looking like that, not the rest of us idiots. Awesome.

[ - ] JudyStroyer 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 22:54:00 ago (+1/-0)

Beautiful work Quebecois, no pick-guard. It's magnificent the way it is.

[ - ] MasterAce 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 22:51:27 ago (+1/-0)

I like matching so I’d personally go with the right one ,also the right one just has a nicer ring to it.

[ - ] Sturmgeschutz 1 point 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 21:10:51 ago (+1/-0)

What wood is the fretboard? Rosewood?

[ - ] Rotteuxx [op] 2 points 2.3 yearsJan 5, 2022 21:25:28 ago (+2/-0)

Aged purple heart... made it for another build that encountered fatal issues and it's been sitting there for about 3 years now. It only had lemon oil on it after a 3000 grit polish but it lost its purple a bit.
