Elite might be the wrong word. The original SS were essentially proud boys types. Most of the Waffen (militarized) SS were foreign volunteers from all around Europe and comprised about 1/3 of Germany's military manpower. They had to provide their own weapons so they were often under equipped compared to regular army units.

As I understand it, the original SS were meant to be the new political class, literally the most educated and sophisticated class in the Reich. They weren’t even intended to be soldiers. But they started out almost 100% German in the Waffen and otherwise. And only took on foreign volunteers as it became clear Hitler never actually gained full control over the standard military generals and would have to fight the bulk of the war with the Waffen SS.
I know one gentleman who was at minimum Hitler Youth. I know him through his family that I'm close to, he married into it. So I see him fairly often and he "knows" me and has for years and I know he's german and what his age is. So I gently ask him a few questions, his family doesn't know nor would they ever be able to put two and two together because they aren't.....umm, history people let's say.
But I talk to him and he knows I know and it's always a nod because he knows I know but he can't say.
My great uncle fought in europe and like a lot of veterans he didn't talk much about it to the family but at a young age he saw my interest and one of the many conversations we had went like this: RMGoetbbels, "I don't care what the history books say about the germans or what your teachers tell you, I was there and the German soldiers were a fine people. They captured me during the war and, I don't know if it's because my last name is german or if it was that the war was nearing it's end, but they treated me like a gentlemen".
You'd have to know my uncle, I imagine some of you have one like him but unfortunately they seem rare. He was a man of integrity, honesty and compassion who always stood up for what was right. A pillar of his community that I am afraid that I will never equal. I still miss him.

Another western unit was the División Azul of Spain that would fight with the Reich on the condition it was only to kill Soviet Jewish communists, similar to The British Free Crops you mentioned.
Closest I came was just a regular Wehrmacht guy who was young when he got put into the war. He got put into the eastern front with a tank brigade so he was one of the foot solider dudes you see running behind and with the tanks. He said it was 4 days into the offensive when he was captured. He said for those 4 days the Soviets never stopped shooting at them. I didn't get a chance to talk about his time in the Soviet prison camps. I also got to be good friends with a woman who was a German but was in that part of Poland that was given to Poland after WW1. They were farmers in that time on the western side of Poland. I knew her for a while before I realized the true history and got a chance to talk to her about it. Her family and many others were being shit on by the Polish so they had to flee one night to Germany. I said to her before she died that 'the people are learning the truth about Hitler and that time' and she was very happy and surprised about that.

That’s pretty cool. My people were farmers from that same Danzig (now Gdańsk) area. We left by 1878 and they never said much but there was a clear stereotype of the Poles being thieves that refused to leave them alone.
I did. Worked next to an SS col. for a short while. However, I never delved into the truth or crowded into his pain. Never asked any holocaust survivors their experiences either and had plenty of opportunity.

Forgive my ignorance, but are you saying these British fought with the Waffen SS as POWs?
I’m familiar with Vlasovs 1 million and many foreign soldiers in the Waffen SS, but I’ve never heard of willing Allied soldiers joining them.
