Ironically the blood diamond thing is just an attempt for the beers to reassert their control over the diamond market. So many diamond mines were popping up from other sources that they created the blood diamond myth and the laser inscribed basically kosher insignia that any diamonds that weren't sold with that insignia or harder to sell. Thus the beers once again gained a lot of control over the diamond market that they had lost.
Years before the whole blood diamonds thing became public and people acted like they gave a fuck I had one date with a woman I had nothing in common with and we were talking about diamonds and I told her about them. She asked 'But what if a woman has always wanted one and it was a fantasy of hers since she was a little girl?"
Did you say I always had a fantasy that a girl would stay home and cook and clean for me and raise my children and have as many as I want and do exactly what I wanted and never ever be able to divorce me. That was my fantasy. Should I have that.

This was one of my wife's prerequisites when we were shopping for her wedding ring. No diamonds. She hates diamonds for all the right reasons. She settled for amythyst and turquoise for the stones and a very conservative, yet elegant setting for them in white gold. I'm a lucky bastard, fellas. She doesn't like gold or silver jewelry, but the things she does like look absolutely beautiful on her.

In college I had a physics professor who was involved in General Electric's diamond manufacturing research. He was one of the people who was negotiating with DeBeers for exclusive licensing of their products (yeah, I know :-) and their reps were lowballing GE. So my prof dumped a fair sized box full of gem quality diamonds in front of them. Didn't take much longer for them to come to a satisfactory (for GE) deal.
He had a couple of cufflinks made from cut synthetic diamonds, they were pretty huge. IIRC they were over 3 carats each.
Actually, diamonds were a little investment for women ...just in case. Remember Maryn Monroe and diamonds are a girl's best friend. That being said, they are hyped. And if they are making a movie, it's for reason. Like beers now mining ocean floors. Diamonnds , like oil, are everywhere. Arkansas has a fun place to try to dig them up yourselves. BUT, a women would be better served with gold and silver, or a plot of land. Think about it. Go with the morganite ring, and some side gold/silver/land.
