The whole site was willing to donate to keep things moving. Instead he trusted the jewiest pack of jews he could find.

Bullshit. Of the 0.1% that aggressively said they would donate, 0.1% of that would have donated.

Should have he gone that route to start, yeah. It would not have worked.

I spent most of yesterday going through old Voat archives and, when the site needed it, they got all the donations they needed, quickly, to the point where they'd shut down the donations because they could run for a handful of months with what they had.

He had guys donating huge amounts of bitcoin. I offered him my old wallet with a few grand in it if he could brute force the password (he refused and I eventually did it myself). Even then I donated 50 quid a few times before he shut down donations.

Every time he asked for money he posted again a few days later thanking the community and saying he had gotten enough. I understand him wanting something more stable but there was no desperate situation he had to solve asap.

That's incredibly generous of you.

I wasn't doing anything with it at the time and I didn't think bitcoin was going to go as nuts as it did. If I had I'd probably have offered a little less.

Either way, the point is that plenty of people were willing to pay to keep the site going. If he'd done some kind of subscription thing to keep donations stable I'd have signed up.

What you said is in fact what happened and yet I still don't understand it. It's not like he was naïve about such a company, so it's almost like he just did it for the money, BUT...he did it so long for nothing that it couldn't have been that either. Voat has always been a strange place...

EDIT: I shouldn't have said it "couldn't have been that", it could have, it just seems odd to me if anything we were ever told was actually true.

I think he let himself be sweet talked. He might not have known about the company's ties when he initially signed the papers, or maybe he missed something in the fine print. I don't completely blame him, it's the kind of mistake I could easily have made.

You cunt. He did more than you or I did.

It's just a fleeting fog in my orb. You can't see it.

[ - ] GrayDragon -1 points 2.4 yearsDec 26, 2021 08:54:12 ago (+0/-1)

No. I cannot. Seems like you just made it up.

I don't think maintenance for the site cost him anywhere close to as much as he claimed it did.

Would cost more than those options, but in reality it would have only been a few hundred a year, and the donations would have covered or came close to covering it.
