Someone Posted They Couldn't Find Beauty. Start Here: Primitive Technology

This isn't beauty like the Roman Coliseum but, it is the basics of how anything is started. It is the simple ingenuity of building blocks that leads to creation, that leads to surplus productivity, that leads to creation for its own sake or creation with superfluous adornment.

If necessity is the mother of invention, leisure may be the mother of art.

Edit: I should have mentioned that closed captioning should be turned on while watching the videos. It is how he narrates. Thanks for the reminder @3Whuurs

This guy disappeared off YouTube cause they refused to stop copyright infringers.
He was losing like 30-60k/mo before leaving.

Supposedly, he got that worked out, but that may not be reality. He also wrote a book, but it seems a bit hard to find in stock. I've also heard he was making a cable show, but nothing has materialized.

I loved watching all his videos. Literally the only man made object in any of his videos was his blue shorts lol
It’s been a little while but he had written a whole article about it on Reddit or someplace describing it.
Either way he never returned to YouTube and left a lot of money on the table there.

Blew my mind when I finally realized he narrated all his videos in the captions.

The only other directly comparable youtuber would probably be Chad Zuber.

Some other good channels would be Ovens Rocky Mountain Bushcraft and Far North Bushcraft and Survival.

There's also Primitive Skills which is pretty much identical in content, but he's not white.

As an art project inside of itself his channel is interesting. But, beauty? I'm not seeing what you're seeing.

So, as the saying goes, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I'm suggesting two different things here.

First, there is beauty in the self-sufficient raw creation here. The use of the most simple elements and creating useful things with it. He is acting as one with nature. He is in the heart of nature and working with it to create without modern tools. And as he creates, he is able to get more and more complex. He eventually uses bacteria to gather iron. He also makes a pump, a kiln, a house with a heated floor. There's a beauty in the bootstrapped technology he develops.

Second, and what you are really looking for is potential. You can create beauty even by the standards you hold. Start small and simple. Repeat it a lot. Make the most simple pots a hundred times or more. You will find yourself becoming skilled, you will add components (handles, spouts, etc.) You will add color, develop shape, and size. And at some point you may change to some other form such as trees or animals, or spacecraft. Many talented people are not born with the gifts, they are developed through repetition and perfect practice. You start knowing nothing and slowly build. Pick anything you find interesting or amusing. Music, woodworking, writing, airbrushing, welding. Just pick something and start screwing around.

Grab a handful of dirt and a stick, it doesn't matter. It will also attune you to see things differently.

Ahh, this is where my view on the channel is incapable of breaking the suspension of disbelief. He is out somewhere doing these things, but he's still going to be eating prepared food (although I can't remember if it was him or somebody else that did a really cool cooked chicken on a stick). Yes, from the standpoint of the video he is working from the bottom, but he's also not having to spend the extra effort that goes into tribal living. It is a testament to how far human knowledge has gone that he can bootstrap that far, and he would be capable of doing these things even if society collapsed and he had to spend 90% of his time hunting.

But, I don't view him as being one with nature here. Getting closer to nature for short term like camping, yes. But realistically, he's not spending the full of his time in nature. It's a beautiful illusion if you can fall into it, I just can't.

But, you do have an excellent point in the final line. Grabbing some sticks metaphorically could mean grab the base level of any art. I've been having to guild new techs lately, and one of the hardest things to get them to do is just play with the material. But, what if things go wrong, you have to clean it up afterwards. Somehow getting the momentum building in older people like myself can be quite difficult and I don't know why. But, you see children do it all the time. No thought of the what ifs. Just ooh that's shinny. Sorry, more rambling then coherent thought.
