From what I can tell, it's not the breed, but how they are raised. And that's based on owning many dog breeds and being attacked by many dog breeds. As I understand, they were bred for hunting bears. They apparently have "complex" personalities, but I've never heard of them to be dangerous.
A couple months ago there was a former Akita owner who recounted a few stories about having an Akita. He put her through some expensive training and she actually used it on at least one or two occasions. The dog was very gentle around his daughter as well.

Suffice it to say, they ended up begging this friend to calm the dog down and they walked away. The training that she was taught stuck with her all throughout her life, and I would say the investment was worth it.

I've got a Cane Corso and Presa Canario. Amazing dogs, great guard dogs, but I still miss my pitbull. He had to be put down at 4yo. He had 19 gran mal seizures in 24 hours, and his behavior changed and he started getting really anxious all of the time. The vet said he had a brain tumor most likely. It was a sad day.
That sucks...at least you got a few good years. Great dogs come in all shapes, sizes and colors. I've never had a mastiff, but they seem like pretty cool dogs. Unless Great Danes are considered mastiffs? I've had a few of them and they were awesome.

Watching many videos the thing about pits is they are often waging their tails when attacking zoned in on singled out prey like it's a game. Once they were off the stairs she went and layed down. Don't know why they didn't shoot her, but I never heard from the cops and we never got broken into or fucked with.

I have lrthal traps all along my property. Anyone tries to invade and they will suffer spike pits, chemical burns, swinging log traps, boards set to break their ankles, I could go on but my point is to make invaders ponder the costs.
In my shitty opinion, these dogs should never be allowed near children. I trust these dogs to babysit just as much as I trust a subhuman, meaning I do t trust either at all.

I use to have a Lab/Irish Wolfhound/wolf hybrid that never could be contained so I let it roam at will. We lived dark inner city high crime area, and I was young and didn't give 2 fucks. She was a great dog, but didn't really care for blacks and would find ways to fuck with them. The neighbors watched as one day the cops came as she'd earlier chased a black woman up onto a hood of a car and was circling and barking. By the time they got there the woman was gone and the dog was on the porch looking angelic. As the cops approached up the stairs to the front door, she took exception and got up, this @ 130 lb grizzled dog, and with the hair standing up and the teeth bared growling softly, slowly backed the cops right back down the front stairs. Once they were off the stairs she went and layed down. Don't know why they didn't shoot her, but I never heard from the cops and we never got broken into or fucked with.

My instincts and experiences far outweigh any government stat. My experience shows that all breeds of dogs attack. My experience also shows me that dogs who are treated well (and weren't abused throughout their life) behave better than those that were not.
