My heat sink was leaking all over everything. I sort of repaired it myself. I realized I was over my shitty hardware skills. I took it to this shop:

The guy's shop was a disaster of computer parts piled up everywhere. Yet he fixed my old system quick and relatively cheap. He even called me asking why there was liquid in the PCI slots, haha! Anyway, he fixed everything for $80 plus $80 for a $200 used video card (my video card got fried by all the liquid from the heat sink leaking on it) to get my system limping until I bought a new one. Great guy. Completely recommend!

I tell everyone who knows nothing about computer maintenance that you would get an external drive and save ALL of your data there, not on the hard drive. Hard drives eventually fail, taking your data with it.

Plus, the operating system eventually just slows down and becomes unusable (takes about three years if you're careful), so you have to reinstall it periodically.

I also recommend keeping a list of software and applications you'll need to have on hand for when you reinstall everything.

I compare computer maintenance with auto maintenance. Not everyone has the knowledge or aptitude to do one or the other, so they need to take it to someone who knows how, but by doing just a few simple things, you'll never suffer a catastrophic loss.

Or you can turn your computer over to incompetent jews.

On an unrelated note, quite a number of pedophiles have (allegedly) been found out when they took their computer in after a crash. One should know that whenever you take your computer to someone for work, they're going to see everything that's on it.

I have terabytes of data. I'm not going to use slow and expensive external storage. Just get a NAS and replace the drive every 5-8 years before it fails. Or better yet, do what I did and build an HTPC to use like a NAS.

Same here. Literally several terabytes, distributed over a few computers (in different locations) and all data is separate from the operating system drives.

I'm still in the stone age when it comes to NAS. I run Plex on a dedicated media server, but I've considered building an HTPC. How do you recommend I start researching this?
