The compiler of the first Christian bible, Marcion of Sinope, left the jewish scriptures out entirely because he thought they were alien to the message of Christ

Marcion compiled the first Bible, consisting of a very early version of Luke (called The Gospel of the Lord) and the original Epistles of Paul. Within the Epistles are: Galatians, 1st and 2nd Corinthians, Romans, 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, Laodiceans, Colossians, Philemon and Philippians. This explains it very well, and you can get a copy of it. Because the gospel and all of the epistles are early versions, they don't have the interpolations and additions from later scribes, adulterating the original message.

Marcion established a church using the scripture he compiled as a focal point and it thrived in Asia Minor (now Turkey). In time he was met with opposition from the Roman church and was challenged and condemned. For centuries, the only knowledge of his and his bible's existence came from what early church writers said about him while quoting his bible. Recently, the Vatican Library confirmed the existence of this bible and provided an extant copy that validated what scholars believed from fragments of other writings. In other words, yes, this actually existed and it's not conjectural.

Why didn't he include the Hebrew scriptures? Because he thought jews were despicable and betrayed the messiah, and the god Yahweh of Hebrew scriptures was antithetical to the God of love of Jesus Christ. He believed Yahweh to be nothing more than a demiurge, a lower creator, and not the true god and father of Jesus. Yahweh was an angry and vengeful god, but the true god could not be.

How did the Hebrew scriptures become part of the Christian bible? From the web site: in year 325, "Emperor Constantine, a worshipper of the Roman Sun God, convenes the Council of Nicaea and orders the Hebrew bible (Old Testament) be added to the Christian bible. The Gospel of the Lord is also removed and replaced with scriptures of unknown origin."

It was a cruel joke and a politically motivated act, and was probably directed from the shadows by jews in Rome.

This is why I pay no attention to the Hebrew scriptures, and neither should you. The god of the jews is an avatar for jews' own self-identity as a people.

Damn, I can't come up with a one-liner to top that. That's solid.

You're welcome. Please take a read-through of the web site. It really does make sense when you look at the big picture.

Even when I was a teenager reading the bible for the first, time, that's the way it all came across to me. And the people in Israel and Judah betrayed their faith to their god time after time, so when Jerusalem was despoiled and the people were taken in captivity, my only thought was "well, serves 'em right, bunch of faithless fucking assholes".

I've always been skeptical about the Hebrew scriptures. I mentioned that I was a Jehovah's Witness when I was young. Even then, I thought he Hebrew scriptures were a load of bollocks and I paid little attention to them, spending most of my time reading the Greek scriptures (minus the Revelation, which I think is ... well, I won't go off on a tangent here).

The message of Jesus is the word of God. Later gospel writers, particular "John" (whoever that was), even used the word Logos to describe Jesus, but Logos was a well understood concept among Greek speaking people to mean "reason" or "creative spirit". This idea fit in well with the newly emerging Christian ideology, and while I don't know whether the Book of John is the word of God, I respect its message, particularly the first chapter.

So, what would I say? I don't say anything. If they believe in Jesus Christ, we have agreement that far, and I don't argue doctrine, even if I think what they believe is ridiculous. That works both ways. But if they think jews are the "chosen people" we have nothing to talk about, even if they're a Christian.
