All three of my basement exercise machines currently need welding

submitted by poopdawg15 to Welding 2.4 yearsDec 6, 2021 20:55:07 ago (+6/-0)     (Welding)

The 1978 Schwinn Exerciser needs the handle bars welded into the hole. (I was going to try golf club epoxy and the current quick fix is super glue)

I just broke the weld on the stair stepper tonight, which motivated the post. I'm fuckin so pissed about that one. I thought I had found a stepper that could handle my 260 lbs. Wrong.

The machine with the rubber bands jimmyrig is a CardioGlide, a cheap version of a rower, that is actually fantastically effective. You can see the hook on the shock absorber has broken off from the bar connected to the seat. (obvi the rubber bands are bc the shock is broken)

They're all heavy, pain in the ass to move, machines. I suppose I could go to a body shop and try there. With what they're worth (about zippo) it's debatably not worth the effort: but they're mine, you know, I love um.

Obviously, best case scenario is someone on this sub is from Chicagoland and we can work something out. Super long shot, I know, but hey I made this post finally.....which I honestly, if you remember, said I was going to, some months ago.

You could buy a cheap welder and fix it yourself.

How about some JB Weld?

Glad I made the post, I'll try both the JB Weld and the Flex-tape. I'll be very impressed if the JB Weld works on the stepper: the other two I'm feeling confident about.

Maybe try both - in addition to duct tape, chewing gum, and SATANISM!

Funny you mention it, Satanism is in the dog house with me for putting out a woke version of "Might is Right"

Satanic faggots.

Well that sucks but I'm glad you're trying to fix everything instead of chucking it out.

Unfortunately you just had to go and blaspheme about epoxies & tape so you're on your own. Enjoy failure.

I'm trying to play ball w the people who have commented

Just yanking your chain. If you take the stepper apart yourself, sand the paint off for extra points, and bring it to your local welding shop you should be fine with 20$.

There's a bit too much potato for me to see what's broken exactly on the giant slingshot.

For the Schwinn, i'm not even sure how that's held in place. The nut on top looks like a wedge mechanism on a standard bike and the one at the base like a bearing housing... esthetics prolly but anyways no clue for that one

I had these ppl recommended on fb. https://www.facebook.com/smokeesweldshop/

First the guy said 50. I said it cost 50, there's another I can get for 30. He countered w 25. Still hassle to move the thing a town over and back. I'm trying the JB Weld first.

The hook needs to be welded to the bar. I put in arrows for clarity. It's not really a hook, if that helps: it's more like a loop that's been cracked.

I break the shit cuz I'm a sprinter. The ferocity of it breaks the shit. https://files.catbox.moe/xq7b26.png

Don't do it!

You'll be wasting your time with epoxy and pissing off the welder you already haggled down if you bring him something to weld that's full of contaminants in the joint.

Think of jb weld as bondo, it'll plug a hole very well but is useless to hold pieces together.

Have you tried Flex-tape™?

[ - ] poopdawg15 [op] 1 point 2.4 yearsDec 6, 2021 21:18:50 ago (+1/-0)

I'll try it

[ - ] lord_nougat 2 points 2.4 yearsDec 6, 2021 22:30:38 ago (+2/-0)

The masonry on our back steps is all shitty and falling apart. Despite what I've heard online about these so-called "freemasons", I can't find any to hire in our area, so I'm trying Flex-tape™ for that, as well. I'll get back to you with the results of this after the testing phase.

You’re trying to fix stone with tape? Shit man.

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 2.4 yearsDec 7, 2021 02:08:45 ago (+1/-0)

Okay.

Flex paste, then?
