Which makes sense, considering the origins of punk as something of a counter-culture movement.
To me, the effect is the opposite of what they intended; There's already ample evidence to the effect that he was a "racist". The thought of The Duke being a Nazi only makes me like him that much more.

A lot of good Americans bought the lies their government was peddling and John Wayne was well situated to sway public opinion.
It might sound hopelessly naive to consider in this day and age and I wonder what it would be like to live under benevolent leadership that actually looked after the people. There have been times throughout history where at least some people actually lived like that.
