The bodyguard says the singer's wife called him and said Cornell had told her over the telephone he was going to commit suicide, where after he knocked on his door and in the absence of a reply had to smash his way in.

Cornell had made himself comfortable on the hotel room bed, the next shot has the noose and blood on the bathroom floor, the one after that shows where the carabena on the rubber cord that supported his weight damaged the door. DetroitNews.
Some say the head trauma took place when the noose was released and the singer's body crashed to the floor, that the rib injuries occurred when the bodyguard applied CPR. That still does not explain how the bathroom door came to be locked from the inside, while the cord and carabena were jammed between the top of the door and the door frame. The simple explanation is the bodyguard entered the room and attacked him, Cornell rushed into the bathroom to evade him and locked the door, the BG smashed the door down to get in and murder him, then hoisted his body up and hung it from the door with the exercise cord.
