I’ve never owned a 1911, but I have shot a couple of these Rock Islands and I know they work.

Handling a well built 1911 is revelatory, shooting and owning one is to begin fighting an addiction

[ - ] Blackpowerwhitepowder 2 points 3.4 yearsNov 28, 2021 20:35:38 ago (+2/-0)

Great choice for a fun little sidearm. I carry my Glock for many different reasons but the 1911 definitely feels better on the hip and is quicker to draw in my opinion.

I have to say that I hate the grip you have on it. I get why, but I still hate it. Get some nice leather gloves to shoot with and put the wood back on it.

Either way congrats

So you want OP to walk around all the time with nice leather gloves? Or do you want OP to train in a way that is different than what he will likely have to practice in the real world? Either way you are not in a spot to be giving advice.

Aside from looking like absolute dog shit compared to the wood scales, the moulded grip will only get in the way. Your fingers will catch and stick to the rubber and you won't get a good reflexive purchase on the weapon. Nice piece though.

Hell yeah bro, that looks way nicer and will work even better.

Thanks. I’m hunting down some factory checkered grips for it.

I've been eyeing a R.I. 1911 in 22 mag. Fun little plinker. Then one in 9.

Everbody's gotta own a 1911 at some point in their life

[ - ] HeyJames 0 points 3.4 yearsNov 28, 2021 19:47:41 ago (+0/-0)

Those are great budget 1911s from what people say. Never saw the point in a 100 year old design with very limited magazine capacity but to each his own

If you need more that eight rounds of .45, you’re fucked. Or, I grab my model 17 and get busy. I just wanted one. They shoot straight and barely have any recoil.

Too bad Para is out of business. They made good stuff.

So they have light recoil? I was looking at a Springfield in .45 acp but I wasn't sure about the recoil. The only other .45 I have shot was a rifle so I don't have much to compare.

I was comparing a Beretta 92x Performance in 9 and the Emmisary in .45. I will probably buy them both but i am surprised to hear that. I would have expected the 9 would be the less serious of the 2.
Maybe with the weight of the .45 they are more stable.
Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate your insight.

The nine is faster, but the 45 is heavier. That Emissary is the gun I’d buy sight unseen. I live in CA and it’s not on our roster of (((approved))) guns, or I’d have two of them.. You should not hesitate on the Emissary. The .92 is awesome as well, but you can get one of those anytime.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey [op] 1 point 3.4 yearsNov 29, 2021 14:34:22 ago (+1/-0)

The .45 and 10mm in a full steel frame 1911 are mild in recoil. A heavy gun with good ergonomics will make shooting a pleasure. A buddy of mine has a Rock Island in 10mm and it hits plates out to 100 yards. Super flat shooting and easily manageable.

[ - ] con77 0 points 3.4 yearsNov 28, 2021 21:44:40 ago (+0/-0)

unless your an elderly cripple or a teenage girl the recoil from a .45 is negligible. especially with a metal frame.

[ - ] HeyJames 1 point 3.4 yearsNov 28, 2021 22:42:17 ago (+1/-0)

.45acp recoil is manageable easily. My 67 year old mother shot one and was fine. .40 cal on the other hand is a little too snappy. It just tends to snap upwards too much for repeat shots more than being unmanageable in your hand

Or suicide yourself when you’re out of ammo for your rifle and your position is being run over……

[ - ] JoesLegHair 1 point 3.4 yearsNov 28, 2021 20:10:36 ago (+1/-0)

It wouldn't be the best choice for self defense but they are fun.

[ - ] Shotinthedark 1 point 3.4 yearsNov 28, 2021 22:32:43 ago (+1/-0)

Why's that?

[ - ] 1Icemonkey [op] 1 point 3.4 yearsNov 29, 2021 14:36:30 ago (+1/-0)

You do understand the design is the most reliable and consistent for all those years, along with the High Power, both created by the same designer. Both used the world over for many many decades. Actually, the model 35 High Power is the most issued sidearm in the world.

[ - ] con77 0 points 3.4 yearsNov 28, 2021 21:48:20 ago (+0/-0)

Ive looked at those. I carried a .45 in the military way back when. My CCW is currently a Kahr CM9 but Ive carried a Sig P320c in .45 or a Glock 30 for years.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey [op] 0 points 3.4 yearsNov 29, 2021 14:27:59 ago (+0/-0)

I have a PM9 from when they first appeared on the marked. I love that gun. Mine is stainless slide. It went back to the factory for warranty work within its first year, and came back even better than new. I still consider it the standard for sub compacts, although they are stuffing 15 rds into some of them now.

[ - ] con77 0 points 3.4 yearsNov 29, 2021 15:37:48 ago (+0/-0)

I like the DAO trigger. I shoot it very well. I would carry my Sig P250c into combat.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey [op] 0 points 3.4 yearsNov 30, 2021 20:52:27 ago (+0/-0)

I find a lot of folks don’t care for the trigger on a Kahr. I rather like it and think it to be a very fine set up. It creeps and breaks like a revolver better than any double out there. The positioning of the feed ramp in relation to the barrel allows for a lower center (I forget the technical term). I do enjoy the octagonal rifling of the PM9, as it improved overal accuracy. I’m not sure the CM9 has that, and that might be the price point determination factor for that model, I don’t quite recall. Regardless, it’s the leading sub compact format on the market, and no one has come close to duplicating it. I quite dislike that silly Shield.

[ - ] con77 0 points 3.4 yearsDec 1, 2021 00:01:04 ago (+0/-0)

A pistol like the CM9 is meant to be used within 12 ft of a scumbag and you dont need rifling at that range. The butter smooth DAO is way better than the plastic hinged piece of shit on a shield. The S&W 2.0 trigger is only bas good as the trigger on my Taurus G2 5 year old $200 pistol.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey [op] 0 points 3.3 yearsJan 22, 2022 22:32:36 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah, I’m not a fan of the shield. Just looks like junk for the money.

[ - ] Gibsmoniesplz 0 points 3.4 yearsDec 6, 2021 20:16:59 ago (+0/-0)

Rock Islands are great for Baseline platforms. They leave a lot of room for improvement while still providing a fine firearm without breaking the bank.

[ - ] con77 0 points 3.3 yearsDec 29, 2021 09:59:19 ago (+0/-0)

So youve had it for a month. How many rounds through it? Does it run?

[ - ] 1Icemonkey [op] 0 points 3.3 yearsDec 29, 2021 20:10:37 ago (+0/-0)

Well the weathers been shit every day I’ve had off, so zero. However, I was reading up on these RIAs and turns out they take about five hundred or so rounds to break in. This was based on two separate gun writers reviews. Since it’s used but like new, I’m thinking the previous owner got frustrated and gave it up. I need to grab a thousand rounds next time it comes available. Can’t order online here. I’ll report back for sure.

[ - ] con77 0 points 3.3 yearsDec 29, 2021 20:58:05 ago (+0/-0)

I bought a Sig P320C .45 About 6 years ago. The ejector broke after 70 rounds on the first day I had it. Had to send it back.

Sig had it for 6-7 weeks before they even looked at it then fixed in a day and sent it back. They tried to charge me $45 shipping!

I was pissed. I had to pay then dispute the charge. I eventually got a refund. Then it was ammo fussy for about 500 rounds. It finally broke in and ran right.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey [op] 0 points 3.3 yearsJan 17, 2022 20:18:26 ago (+0/-0)

That’s interesting to hear about Sig. I always heard the best thing to do is find something wrong with your new gun and send it in for warranty work. They (whomever) will usually slick it up an extra bit for your complete satisfaction. This happened with a Kahr PM9 I own. A hundred or so rounds in and the slide was hanging up in the last 1/8 inch going into battery. I called Kahr and they immediately were familiar with the issue. Apparently there was not enough material milled from the underside of the slide and it was hanging up on the barrel lug. Anyway, my slide came back in a few weeks and the gun was more on point than ever.

Anyway, I got a chance to run a few mags through the .45 today and it did just fine. I removed those awful rubber grips and installed the factory smooth wood grips pictured above. I don’t like them. Going for some wood checkered, maybe some composit checkered, we'll see. I still need to get a couple hundred downrange before I can keep it in the nightstand. I only do that when they have proven themselves.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey [op] 0 points 3.3 yearsJan 22, 2022 22:27:41 ago (+0/-0)

Another update: got the Hogue checkered rubber grips on. This is it, feels like it should. I'll give the other two sets of grips away in a pile of stuff I need to offload. Gonna get a few rounds off this weekend.
