The pharma in question is Novavax whose vaccine is an actual vaccine based on flu vaccine technology. That means that since the workflows are already in place, the technology is decades old, and already geared for COVID work, they just feed it a new sample and out pops what they need for testing - they don't have to set anything up at all. And since they're not fully approved but were one of the major companies Warp Speed and other government funding went to, they have direct access to resources that other vaccine companies don't (excluding the big pharmas since they're already approved).

It takes like no time at all to replicate viruses for shit like this using traditional technology especially since the main COVID strain was already sequenced. As soon as the new variant was identified, it was already in a lab and the sequencing was already done (that's how they knew it was a different strain).

Thus, for traditional vaccine manufacturing, the turn around time to develop and test is relatively small. Novavax's main problem has been consistency in manufacturing. That's why they're behind the curve.
