That landing was smoother than some at the airport

A quick lookup says that small and big planes generally have a 10:1 glide ratio.

The benefit of commercial is that starting at 35000 feet provides miles of gliding.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider

Making his best guess as to this speed for the 767, he flew the aircraft at 220 knots (410 km/h; 250 mph). First Officer Maurice Quintal began to calculate whether they could reach Winnipeg. He used the altitude from one of the mechanical backup instruments, while the distance travelled was supplied by the air traffic controllers in Winnipeg, measured by the aircraft's radar echo observed at Winnipeg. In 10 nautical miles (19 km; 12 mi), the aircraft lost 5,000 feet (1,500 m), giving a glide ratio of approximately 12:1 (dedicated glider planes reach ratios of 50:1 to 70:1).[15]

Good landing. I don't wish that on anyone.

That was a good landing.

Importance of staying calm. Nice work.

I once flew across a large part of America in a helicopter for work. Had plenty of time to talk to the pilot and we eventually discussed the safety of a helicopter vs. a plane and he explained that he'd MUCH much rather lose power in a helicopter because it can emergency land straight down and wouldn't have to glide land in a field (which implies there even is one). The rotors would still spin on the way down and you could theoretically land in someone's back yard.

EDIT: I forgot to make my point...before that I had assumed the helicopter would be worse because it would drop like a brick, but I was wrong. The rotors keep spinning and allow you to "glide" down, but not doing forward, so you don't need to luck out and have a clearing in the area when you happen to almost die.

Why didn't it explode when he crashed like on TV?
