Had to put down my dog today

submitted by PotatoWhisperer to dogs 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 17:54:24 ago (+71/-0)     (dogs)

Fuck cancer.

I don't really have social media outside of this place, and so I share with you a bit of my sorrow.

Today I lay you to rest,
with as many tears in my eyes
as all the years of selfless love you have given me
since I brought you home from the shelter

RIP little buddy.

Edit: thanks for the kind words internet friends. It does help some knowing others have gone through this as well.

I feel you m8, I had to put down & bury my 12 yo pup last Monday, had a tumor that went full retard.

Rescued her when she was 6mo and went through so much in my life with her as my faithful companion.

As soon as I have time off, I'm getting a puppy!

My dog died of cancer. Seems a lot more dogs dying of cancer now than 30, 40, 50 years ago. Where does pet food come from?

[ - ] mattsixteen24 2 points 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 20:02:26 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah, or the dog dies of kidney disease. They start drinking lots of water.

My coworker's dog died of cancer, I think it was glandular though this was a few years ago. She thought it was due to the pesticides her condo complex sprayed on the landscaping being absorbed through the feet. She had him in agility competitions and was very careful about him, and even made his own food. Fuck cancer :(

Lots from China I think. I remember a series of stories in the early 2000s about Chinese dog food having melamine in it. And how nothing was being done about it. Even in some of the nicer brands like Iams.

So sorry for your loss. My condolences sir. I'm pretty sure we lost one of ours because of a mistake that i made two weekends ago. I left the gate open after working outside all day on my shop. Both of our dogs (one is 9yrs old and her pup is 4 or 5) got out and it was all my fault. The mom luckily showed back up yesterday evening after being gone for an entire week. The younger one still hasn't come back. She was torn to ribbons like some coyotes got her or something. I feel so bad because they are my father's dogs mostly. Its not anything close to how you are feeling (I know because ive been through the loss of my best buddy too.), but i still feel super fucking bad. Just know you definitely aren't alone man. I know its not much, but i'll make sure to pray for you tonight. Stay strong brother.

I went through the trauma of losing my closest friend when I was a kid and it was a sickening experience for which I swore never to repeat...I can handle pretty much anything...but not that. Fucking animals do it to us all the time, I get upset when my bears go down for the winter and yesterday's send off was really hard on the wife.
Look at it this way, here we say "there they go",...on the other side they say "here they come"....

[ - ] PostWallHelena 5 points 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 18:23:04 ago (+5/-0)

Fuck. Im so sorry. Ive been through that.

Me and my current little buddy are sending hugs and waggilies.

Prayers

When you think your dog has died, it has just fallen asleep in your heart. And by the way, it is wagging its tail madly, you see, and that’s why your chest hurts so much and you cry all the time. Who would not cry with a happy dog wagging its tail in their chest. Ouch! Wap wap wap wap wap, that hurts. But they only wag when they wake up. That’s when they say: ‘Thanks Boss! Thanks for a warm place to sleep and always next to your heart, the best place.’

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sure if you're here that dog has had a good life. It'll take a few days, but that's what you should focus on going forward.

I feel for you man. It's a sorrow that's worth repeating. It's a shame we weren't built with the same biological clock.

It hurts so much exactly because they were such a loving, selfless, joyful part of our lives.

That's a tough day no matter how you look at it. A pic would be nice.

There's a punk band called The Vandals. They have a song called Canine Euthanasia. Saddest up tempo song you'll ever hear. Read the lyrics to it. It's a really heartwarming song. Every time I hear it I think about the good times I had with my little guys.

Sorry for your loss fren.

In February 2019, My Italian greyhound got hit by a car when he saw a dog across the street. My girl was bringing in groceries and had him with her unleashed. She had to carry his lifeless body (brain matter and eyeball popped out from impact) to the truck and bring him to the vet.

I didn’t even see it (I was at work), but his loss greatly affected me. I lost many family dogs, but personally raising him and bonding with him, made the pain much greater.

[ - ] Jerd34 3 points 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 23:07:00 ago (+3/-0)

There's no grief or pain equal to losing a dog. I'm sorry brother. I went through the same thing a few years ago with my chocolate lab. It messed me up for several months. I still shed a tear from time to time years later. I know, feel, and share your pain. You'll eventually process through it. My deepest condolences.

One of the worst things, sorry.

Somewhere another dog will be saved from death when you are ready.

God Bless you & your little feller who crossed the rainbow bridge.

If there was any justice in the universe, we would be reunited with our beloved pets in the afterlife.

Hey
God speed man. Take comfort in those years you had together. I lost a few dogs in my life and they all take a little part of my soul with them. I’m thinking of you and your loss and sending all the positive energy I can. To all the dogs who have brought us all unconditional love, thank you.

[ - ] StopTheEvilAgenda 3 points 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 20:27:47 ago (+3/-0)

We have an older diabetic doggie that doesn’t have too long left. She is happy now and still active, but we don’t expect her to make it through next year.
It’ll be the second one in the last few years. We will likely rescue another one a while after she goes…. The house is empty without something leaving little messes and surprises.

I hope some glorious shitposts brighten your day.

[ - ] oldblo 2 points 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 22:17:29 ago (+2/-0)

My condolences.
Mine is unlkely to last long. (Technically not mine.) They are old with lots of problems. Honestly they lasted much longer than I expected.
The main issue is something wrong with their lungs. It smells like corpse breath and any exertion or excitement leaves them hacking something fierce.
I really wish I could do more for them than feed them some symptom suppressant medicine of questionable efficacy and pet them.

I know its out of my hands and the outcome is inevitable but I cant help but feel like problems are things you should be able to solve. It gives a feeling of inadequacy.

[ - ] AlexanderMorose13 2 points 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 22:04:03 ago (+2/-0)

I fucking hate cancer. It's a shitshow that I've seen on repeat far too often in my life before I learned to do something about it.

Your dog was lucky to have you and didn't stop loving you after it passed. Love never dies, it just changes form. Rest assured that your dog is happy now that he doesn't have to suffer, and he has a lot of good times to remember because you gave him someone to thank for it.

[ - ] ToNigIsToNog 2 points 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 21:44:33 ago (+2/-0)

to all my brothers echoing the sadness of losing a loved one, fake heed. This hurt is one of grief of ourselves, the pain we experience from our loss. Stand strong brothers, our response to loss is a human one, but do not hurt for those we have lost. We have shared great times, lives, journeys, with those we love. Mourn the end of the chapter, it makes us Human. If you don't have a dog, go to a shelter. If you cannot keep one, move. The phrase of man's best friend is not true; rather they are men's greatest ally, honorable, dutiful, and loyal for all their days. Rescued, or shelter animals, know this more, and you will find it in their love.

This chapter is over. Mourn, and move dutifully towards the next, with a companion to guide you, when you are ready.

May you and yours find yourselves among the halls of Valhalla, and may your reunion be one of joy.

Sorry for your loss… R.I.P.

[ - ] ToNigIsToNog 2 points 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 21:36:43 ago (+2/-0)

Your hurt is for yourself; mourn your friend. he is not hurt. he runs in fields and chases innumerable balls and rabbits and has trillions of young to play with, human and dog alike. He awaits you in Valhalla. Time moves differently here, he won't have to wait long. Make sure your life means something, so you can continue amazing journeys together after the end. Be well brother.

[ - ] recon_johnny 1 point 2.4 yearsNov 23, 2021 12:00:29 ago (+1/-0)

Just did this less than two months ago.

I understand, dude. It's hard, and it's part of the contract we make when we become their owner. We're going to outlive them.

Hope you have good times remembering.

[ - ] HughBriss 2 points 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 21:09:59 ago (+2/-0)

I can only repeat what everyone else here has said and express my deepest condolences. I'm in my 60s and have wept over the loss of many four legged friends, some mine and some others', and it never get easier. They love unconditionally and only want to make us happy. It hurts, and you never forget them.

I'm also glad to see so many who have given kind words. It says a lot about the people here. I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope you soon find another little friend who loves you to fill the void.

Sorry for the loss of your little buddy PW. Few things are worse in this life than parting with such fine company. I believe it's a truism that dogs greatest failing is that they live such short lives.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey 2 points 2.4 yearsNov 22, 2021 20:39:04 ago (+2/-0)

Oh man, how sad. I’m so sorry.
I don’t have a dog, but I have chickens, who I keep as pets just like one would a dog. They have names, they jump up in my lap, they like to snuggle and such, just like a dog.
One of my boos died this week, totally unexpected. She was 8 1/2 years old, a spunky little Rhode Island Red. Her name was Rosie.
She was in perfect health, full of life, nothing wrong at all. I came home to find she had died, but worse than that, a vulture had come in and torn her to shreds. I still can’t get the vision out of my mind. The other girls were scared to death and are still skittish from what they saw
I feel for you.

Only time will change that heavy loss into sweet remembrance; but it will come.

In his own way, that's exactly what he is doing, just in a different method. I'm sure he's smart enough to know that posting this here on a thread that is pretty heartfelt is going to lead the "morally superior" response of everyone opposed to his viewpoint shitting on him for it. However, releasing some anger and tension towards the perceived "villain" is still a form of therapy that others here aren't directly offering. So, in a way, he's offering his condolences just like the rest of us.

While this, of course, may or may not be true, the fun part is that when you think like this, it doesn't become his decision to make.
