A comparison between negroes in the US and Irish immigrants in the 19th century is useful. The Irish were regarded as unmanageable by the English and were made unwelcome in the US for the same reason. They were hot tempered, often didn't speak English or when they did they were unintelligible, and largely unskilled. Over time though, they completely assimilated by learning how to behave themselves, learned skills, and became a part of the culture rather than outside of it. They became leaders and some became affluent because they wanted to be Americans badly enough.
Now compare negroes, especially the sons and daughters of former slaves. As a people, they made no progress from 1865 to the time that recording was made. If anything, they regressed considerably.
