A violin sings, a fiddle dances.

They always used to say a violin was played under yr chin, a fiddle was played in the crook of yr arm.

Only self taught fiddlers play it in the crook of their arm that I'm aware. Classically trained will always have it under their chin. It's really just different kinds of music being played since fiddle is a colloquial term.

My Uncle was a fiddle player. I don't pretend to know the proper way to play but he always held his under the chin.

I was once told that one is carried in a case, the other in a bag.

But I think more accurately: a fiddle is fun.
