If I have a car that can auto-parallel park, do I have to do that faggy thing where I put my palms up like I'm warming them by the fire? Or can I simply let my hands rest on my legs?

Yes you have to do that pretty much all the time. It's a legal requirement. If you know how to drive and park a car I dunno why you wouldn't just do it "the old way".
