He likely poured gasoline, alcohol, or similar all over the inside, prior to trying to light it on fire. These types of accelerant are liquid when contained but quickly evaporate when exposed. This would have filled the entire car with a highly flammable gas, along with plenty of oxygen to burn it, and leaving a single broken window as the easiest path of escape.

Ignition of highly flammable substances, in an enclosed space, with a single exit, is how guns and cannons work.

He probably struggled to light the thing because the fuel vapor had displaced the oxygen around the window area. Only when his body/arm movement brought enough oxygen into the mix did the reaction get going. Nigger was basically huffing gas up until then.
