THE WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD

submitted by Zyklonbeekeeper to HDLunited 3.5 yearsNov 12, 2021 03:34:15 ago (+18/-0)     (HDLunited)

Regarding the rendition of Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", one word, futile, there'll never be another song that compares.

I remember that day back in 75, I was in Wawa moose hunting and I had a walking cast on a broken left leg. Buddy and I were trampling through a swamp in the area of Jimmy Cash lake and we were right on the heels of a monstrous sized bull and two cows.

It was 2.00pm and 4hrs left before dark, mixed heavy cloud and clear sky and temperature above freezing. We positioned ourselves at the swamp/bush line in wait for the moose...no sooner than we finished a sandwich we're hit with high wind, drop in temperature and flakes of snow, something wasn't right so we bailed.

Back in Wawa 2hrs later and it's miserable, by 9.00pm that night the Trans Canada hwy was closed due to windage debris, huge fallen White Pine trees right over the hwy in a number of places and there were a couple places on the Trans Canada hwy where waves went right across the hwy. The next morning we got the news that the "good ship and it's crew" went down into an ice water grave.

Gordon Lightfoot's song pretty much illustrates the last few minutes of the poor unfortunate souls aboard the ship that fateful night.
Lake Superior at night is scary, that lake on a tempest November night will forever haunt those who it does not claim.
There is only one "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", nobody will change that.

I watched a 2.5 hour discussion about this on Youtube once. Just randomly. It was fucking incredible. There's so much more to this story. If I remember correctly, there was another ship that braved the storm to help the Edmund but couldn't make it. The crew still lives with the pain of not being able to help.

I’m from Michigan’s and tear up a bit anytime I hear this song. And I’m a “millennial”.

I live in Sault Ste Marie Canada neighbor...I often fish Lake Superior with my 21ft Starcraft and have been right over the Edmund's grave many times...I've been on that Lake 35 miles from shore and I've seen that bitch of a bathtub go from a mirror to pile of shattered glass in the blink of an eye...that fucking Lake will turn a strong man into a helpless wanderer after 10minutes of pounding seas. Lightfoot's song referring to the "15 miles behind her" is very misleading, in gale force winds it took buddy and I over an hr to go 12 miles in slamming waves before we could get into Goulais Bay for shelter...that lake makes men out of boys real quick, it also adds to the obituaries, I know a few guys who went down in those waters, particularly out near Michipicoten Island.

I cruise Lake Huron to Lake Erie from March to November. Things can change on you in a minute out there. She didn't have a chance.

I didn't archive this for the videos sake.

Also this week is the anniversary of the "Big Blow", a monster storm that took 250 souls.

The wreck of the Daniel Morrell was actually worse. There were reports of a ship approaching and it struck the Morrell. As it turned out, it wasn't another ship, but the stern of the Morrell itself. It broke in half and the aft end was still under power by the engine drove itself into the bow section.

There was only one survivor in a lifeboat, his 3 crewmates froze to death.

The Fitz was bad, but it tends to hog all the attention of shipwrecks in the great lakes.

That would be like a headless body running in circles.

Oh, good, another "it was faked" article by the writing group called "Miles Mathis". This is not a single author, all of the articles were written by numerous people, and the web site has CIA stink all around it. It is literally impossible for one man to have written the quantity of articles "he" claims to have written.

Why is news trying to be a song? It's confusing.

Did someone release another version?

Yeah apparently so that's the reason for my submission.
