You're supposed to grab the halft of the axe, use momentum to swing it over your head and pull it downwards. Your hands only slide to the bottom of the axe in the final second. She's just holding it like a sword and chopping it like a sword. Because all the weight is at the head, not only will she get no power out of her swing, her swing was completely halted by the lack of momentum. Essentially only gravity was swinging it.
