I've loved that song since I discovered it forty years ago, when I bought a cassette tape of bluegrass music compilation. I thought it was about the saddest song I'd ever heard, and it's stayed with me as a haunting song of loss and regret.
I don't know what the meaning or subtext of it is, but it sounds like a man who left the mountains during WWI and stayed away for too long, and when he returned, everyone he knew either died or left, and he sings his despair that he didn't keep in contact with any of them, and now it's too late. So sad.

Outstanley!
Do you have any other music like this? All I know is Devil Makes Three and The Dead South. I love them both and I'm really interested in old frontier music thank you!
