It's more common in America since Europeans mixed together there and many have lost their ethnic identity. So now, most Americans identify as white. Plus, 'white' has changed its definition over time. It used to not include Mediterranean people. Even back in the early days of America, there's a quote from Benjamin Franklin talking about how he despised all the German immigrants coming to America and referred to them as being dark skinned (https://archive.md/9ziFC). Before everyone was mostly mixed in America, people were still referred to by their ethnic group, hence all the ethnic jokes/slurs.
