"Former Apple engineer says the button on iPhones asking apps not to track you is a 'dud' that gives users a 'false sense of privacy.'" https://archive.vn/re3Ss
No. An actual virtual clone. If they get your phone for a few hours. They can clone it fully SIM and IMEI and everything. They can get the calls your phone gets same with texts.
So now they can parse your photos "looking for child porn" and they can also trigger your phone to take pictures without you knowing?? Wow... Not hard to see where this is going.

That is definitely the other option.
One end is to build a basic phone that doesn't send any data, the other end is to make an app that constantly "phones home" all sorts of random and trivial things.
The "arduino phone" would be more like a home phone, not very portable and even then there needs to be trust in the cellular device to not send whatever signals back.
It's just chinese hardware bought off alibaba, loaded with a modified version of android and then sold at a markup. So there's two points of potential compromise. Feel free to look into it, but if you're gonna buy the thing then definitely look into it.

It only has basic features (call and/or text) - but isn't that the definition of a phone?
