Soy found in 99% of canned tuna

submitted by NeedleStack to Based_Shopping 2.5 yearsNov 1, 2021 11:03:35 ago (+36/-0)     (Based_Shopping)

This was my personal observation. I haven't had canned tuna in years so I was shopping for some (to make tuna salad) and soy or soybean oil was listed in about 10 different (by brand and type of fish) cans' ingredients.

It didn't matter the brand and it didn't matter the type of fish (whether it was albacore or tuna).

It turns out that even if a can says it has "vegetable broth" there could be soy in the broth without them reporting it. I rarely buy packaged products so this was a real eye opener for me.

I finally settled on a brand that had only tuna and water.

Always check your food labels' ingredients (and screw Monsanto)!

I've only ever gotten it canned in water.

"Vegetable" has been a code word for soy for a while. "Vegetable oil", "Vegetable shortening", always soy.

Just checked mine and packed in water and no soy indicated. Thanks for the headsup.

Who buys tuna in oil? Tuna in water only. I don't want no greasy ass oil on my tuna.

I always wondered who was buying tuna in oil. Anyone here do that, and if so, why?

E: I'm not responding to you all, but thanks for your cooperation on informing me why. Upvotes everywhere. Cheers!

This lad knows how a proper Roman eats Tuna

Depends how you eat it, if it's to spread onto something then oil is best.

Sunflower oil makes it nice, brine water is gross

Do not buy canned tuna from a Urine Therapist. You've been warned.

[ - ] x0x7 2 points 2.5 yearsNov 1, 2021 21:38:12 ago (+2/-0)

I've never heard of a urine therapist. Sounds like something kinky I don't want to know about.

I think he meant urologist?

[ - ] Centaurus 0 points 2.5 yearsNov 2, 2021 10:40:09 ago (+0/-0)

Nope, I meant Urine Therapist -- it was a play on "urine therapy". They put the pee in therapy.

Kek. Sounds like something you'd subscribe to on onlyfans.

There are three major types of tuna - they use different names probably to confuse people. "light, chunk, white, albacore" are all referring to different tuna. The only kind of tuna you should bother with most of the time is yellowfin tuna in olive oil. That is what most southern europeans refer to as tuna and there is no soy.

Not in safe catch baby! Best tuna in the game.

Buy tuna in water. Problem solved.

If it's vegetable oil, even if it's not soy, it's probably canola which is just as bad for you.

Safe Catch in the Yellow cans at Costo say that they test each fish and there is zero mercury. Packed in water and not much of that. It has a shorter shelf life than regular stuff. @ 1 year.

I too found this out just a few weeks ago, the vegetable broth thing. Starkist doesn’t list soy. I also found that Polar brand lists only albacore, water, salt.

Also the 2 sandwich (per) cans are smaller and less tuna (more water) now. than say 30 years ago. AND cost MORE.

Can’t avoid that

The limited amount of mercury encountered in fish won’t make a difference over your lifetime. You would probably have to eat nothing but mercury laden fish for Fifty years every day for it to make any difference. Our bodies can filter that shit out. It’s all hype.

I think the issue people were worried about is fetuses that are more sensitive.

Fun fact though, tuna has absolutely shit omega-3 profile, meaning it's one of the worst on mercury/omega-3 ratio.
