great job digging this up. this is what "re-writing history" is all about - people believe all kinds of bad things because the constant resistance within their culture to subversion is hidden from them and erased from history. the key really is to destroy those who formulate the false reality. nothing is more important than getting people to stop trusting the lying press.

It was a political-warfare attempt at instilling insurrections in the South. Nothing more.

You are right about everything you said, except it was somewhat about slavery due to the Northern Abolitionist movement. It was a factor. Not much, but it was there.
