Thomas Paine never intended his words in the way they are used now, and she is defending the deliberate misquotation of a short segment of his work cut out of its context to mislead people into believing his philosophy supported the idea of an open country.

Last thing I need people like this to point out in discussions with people like them, is to say to them that a speaker should not just hold themselves responsible for what they say, but also for what their audience hears, if your words lead your audience to the wrong conclusions that is your fault as a speaker, not theirs as a listener, and an honest communicator takes what their audience would take away from hearing them into very close consideration and choose their words carefully. A failure to communicate effectively to your audience is a sign that you are either a poor speaker who should be replaced, or a dishonest speaker with malicious intentions for their audience, the intent to lie without speaking an untruth, to purposefully lead their audience astray and wrongfully absolve themselves of responsibility for the effect of their words.
