The central issue.

Back in the 1992 U.S. presidential campaign that saw Bill Clinton knock off incumbent George Herbert Walker Bush and start the massive swing to the Left in D.C., the sex-crazed candidate summed up the entire election in just four words: "It's the economy, stupid" — the quote originally coming from Clinton's adviser and strategist, James Carville, but Clinton was happy to ride it to victory over the hapless Bush senior.

Bush was such a weakling that after his famous utterance at the 1988 Republican Convention of "read my lips, no new taxes," the Democratic Congress got him to do the exact opposite and raise taxes.

Bush saw it as a compromise, the Democrats saw it as blood in the water. Clinton replayed the "read my lips" declaration over and over and over and crushed Bush, convincing Americans that Bush was untrustworthy. By the way, on that point, Clinton was correct. But in general, the elites have created a cottage industry on the single-phrase summation: one line that encapsulates the entire problem or issue that is easily digested by the masses.
