Simple Solar Power System for an off grid Cabin

From the video description:

"Here is a VERY simple solar power set-up for your remote off grid cabin. By using a single car battery, a single 100 watt solar panel and an inexpensive charge controller, we can be ready to run a computer, or a few lights, or charge our hand held devices."

Bushradical got me started on my homestead.

Did you build a cabin like some of the ones he's done on his channel? And how'd it go? What were the costs? :) It's how we're thinking of starting out.

I moved from an apartment into an RV and we lived in that while I built the house. I used some archived books from the 50s for floor plans. Used bush radicals method to build it. My biggest issue was leveling the foundation due to so much settling, and getting my good trees through all the unusable trees and brush.

I did most everything by myself with my friend coming to help with some lifting along the way.

I paid ~120USD in builder permits and didn’t buy any framework wood. I only bought the internal materials like drywall and insulation. We currently have a ranch home with 950sqft and a central fireplace.

We plan on building a second, larger home on the property in a few years, with improvements. We are going to document the building of the second home. I also want to do a tour and guide on my gardening and animal husbandry as well. If there is anything in detail to cover or more in depth questions please fell free to ask.

Thank you! We recently bought forested land and it makes me ill that we're in an apartment in town while it sits there without us and not being worked.

Our plan is to move an RV or tiny house up onto the property once my husband gets a remote job and can work from the site while we also spend the rest of the day and night working the property. It's gonna be awesome and I can't wait!

I have more free time now, growing almost all my own food than I ever did before

No, and neither would it through regular utilities, that’s why that shit isn’t free.

That system still requires maintenance, which is what I meant in the prior comment. Sorry you didn’t detect that.

You would need more batteries and solar panels. It's easy to do but gets expensive to buy good batteries. You might need to make adjustments for the sun direction and clean the panels and do simple maintenance. Winter time has less sun also so throw in some wind generators.

Golf cart battery will do deep cycles.

A car battery sucks, except maybe the glass type.

Car batteries are considered fully discharged at 12V and suffer damage after that point. Over charging releases hydrogen... explosive

Thanks for the tip! That's why he used a charge controller though (and on a marine battery).

He did mention the battery in the truck was a deep cycle marine battery. Not a standard car battery at all.

Yes, a golf cart battery or deep cycle marine battery is the type to look for.

This is a great setup for a single 100W panel.

At 12V, solar panels become high current very quickly - meaning that any standard extension cord won't cut it.

At 200W (2 panels), the current will be just under 20A at peak output (which may never happen, depending on location and sunlight), and even 12AWG extension cords run the risk of overheating.

Another thing to watch out for is the inverter - some of those do "square wave" or "modified sine wave" outputs, which can make some laptop power supplies very unhappy. Pure sine wave inverters are the best, but are also spendy.

It does seem like a waste to take 12v dc, create 120v ac out of it with the inverter, then remake dc (most likely at more than 12v tho) from that. It would be nice if there were some standard 12V (or 24V) input for electronics as an option.

If the weather is cool, most of the waste will be heat.
