Whoah, that's actually an excellent observation. There was an AMC dealer a few blocks from our house back then ; the Eagle was weird in how tall it was off the ground. Of course I wanted one. Never got one, of course...
If you enlarge the photo you'll notice on the tree trunk, the guy is looking at a "Titmouse Upside-down Nuthatch" with a hooked beak which, in June of 1977, have been documented as now nonexistent in most of the world with the exceptions of the Lake Baikal petroleum sanctuary and certain areas of Mongolia...so I'm going to go with 1977.
I never had a Big Wheel when I was a kid. But, my little sister had one. By that time I was too big to ride it. I had to put my legs OVER the steering handles and I couldn't peddle. So, I'd just get on and coast down the big hill near my house. Of course, there was no way to stop it. It was a death machine. I probably crashed 50 times doing at least 30 mph. We'd play a game called "race the tire". Where, you'd roll a tire down the hill and you'd have to try and beat it. The person on the big wheel would need a head start because you aren't going to beat the tire if you both start at the same time. So, we'd time the release of the tire when the big wheel got a certain distance down the hill. The funny thing about that is, the wheel would catch up and then you get hit by a tire bouncing down the hill at 30 mph. HILARIOUS! Kids these days will never get to experience that.
