There's about 30 studies since the end of 2020 that demonstrated it's aerosolized in the breath, no longer just droplet as once thought. Which of course means paper masks are 100% worthless since they only had a chance at prevention of droplet. All mask mandates are theatre and scientifically meaningless.

The debate is between droplets and microdroplets. What is an aerosolized particle but a really small droplet.

Theres a distribution of droplet sizes coming from people. Some are big and might carry a lot of virus but they just fall to the ground. Others could hang in the air for a long time and penetrate masks, penetrate the side of your mask, get in your nose. Really small particles could theoretically get all the way to the lungs and aveoli because their low momentum means they don’t smash in to the back of your nose or some of the twists and turns of your bronchial tree. Ive seen some researchers getting in to hot debates about the definition of droplets and aeresolized particles. But unlike gender, it is a non-binary issue.

When something is aerosolized in breath it's no longer classified as droplet based. Yeah but its important to understand that classifications are useful but they can lead to a misunderstanding about reality and physics. There is a continuous range of different sized of particles and definition as droplet or aerosolized particle is arbitrary. I dont even think theres widespread agreement. I imagine that the surgical masks are blocking a lot of particles in the 20 to 100 μm range which would carry tens of thousands of virions, but don’t travel around corners so well. N95s are going to block out most particles as small as a micron. But even the surgical mask will block some smaller particles. This is a physics problem to do with size. Just because a mask is not rated to block a certain particle classification does not mean its not filtering out some covid particles. Particles dont come in two sizes. Filtering materials do not come in a single strength. These are human designations but they promote a misunderstanding about whats happening at the molecular level. Droplet size, filter size, fluid dynamics. These are all basically continuous variables. There is no clear demarcation between a droplet or an aerosol in the real world.

I think they work fine at filtering for a long time if handled gently. The problem is they can build up bacteria, fungus, etc and you cant wash them. Plus the oxygenation is not great. N95 masks with a bit of a seal around the edge should work pretty well but you should swap them with a new one after several hours and air the old one out for a few days.

Alternatively there are the industrial masks with a real airtight seal that people use when dealing with a lot of small particles. Those filters should be good for months. Those would be more reliable and probably more comfortable to breathe in because the air is only filtered going in so theres less resistance.
