Firearm background check "delayed"?

submitted by 0rion to AskUpgoat 3.6 yearsOct 11, 2021 21:41:13 ago (+12/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

Tried to buy myself a rifle today, but my background check was "delayed". I have never experienced this before...I have a clean record and have bought guns before, so this seemed odd to me. Any goats here who have had this happen and can offer some insight? Did I make it onto a watchlist somehow or something?

Not stupid enough to paper trail a weapon since 1994.
When they first came for them.

Last 2-pistols I purchased were purchased on a Saturday and my delayed check would finally go through on following Monday. Going to go ahead and get CCW permit so I don’t have to wait/endure the BS check with future purchases.

Work in the industry, and run quite a few 4473s. So we have been seeing a few more delays on guns, but most of the people that come in and get delayed, say it's common for them and they usually have common names... i.e. jon Johnson. It is especially common for people that have common black names to go through a delay process. As crazy as it is too, a lot of people have been held up on temp delays because their name is on a traffic report, even just as a witness.

It's happened to me a few times, but not that often. It's normal. As much as CCLs shouldn't be a thing, at least I no longer need to do background checks.

In my state if you have a cwp you don’t have to get background check.

I was in and out of the store in 15 minutes when I bought my long gun. I was surprised how quick the background check went actually. Took them longer to find someone to escort the gun out of the store before they could hand it to me.

Ok fess up, which is the state that's more retarded than California?

It's a (retarded) store policy rather than law, as far as I know. Sportsman's Warehouse and Rural King both do this.

This happens to me when I want a rifle not a handgun though just started 2 years ago. I sell firearms and I've never seen so many delays for no reason recently. No idea qhy

Monday was a federal holiday. Probably just backed up

Not how it works. NICS is always open. Maybe not Christmas but I've never worked that day.

The beasiality conviction delayed it

Unregistered weapons are important too.

My very first purchase they never got back to the store, so I picked it up after the 5 days, or whatever it was.
Another time;
Someone managed to mess up entering my SSN, that got me a delay, they called back the next day when they figured out the reason.
On another occasion;
Someone managed to spell my name wrong, that also got me a delay.

No real big problems other than those.

You are the one who fills out the 4473 so you spelled your name wrong. Your ssn isn't required.

[ - ] Love240 0 points 3.6 yearsOct 11, 2021 23:58:30 ago (+0/-0)

No I didn't, the employee of the shop enters the information in the computer from the paper form, they somehow entered it wrong. What makes you think you know better than the person it happened to? Just ridiculous.

[ - ] Shotinthedark -2 points 3.6 yearsOct 12, 2021 00:34:48 ago (+0/-2)

Because I do 10 or so 4473's a day selling firearms the customer fills out their info. The seller will put your ID state and # not your name. We check your ID to make sure everything is matching the id. So you spelled your name wrong and the seller didn't catch it.

Trying to break a record for being wrong or something? The person entering the info didn't see the computer enter an extra letter in my name when he was entering it (his fault, either way). My form was indeed spelled correctly.

I have to ask... Did you use your real name or your Voat name on the application? (sorry; TALK LOL)

[ - ] TwoTone 0 points 3.6 yearsOct 11, 2021 22:39:10 ago (+0/-0)

The system used is poorly designed & implemented.

You can get false positives by just having a name that is similar to someone else on the list.

Best part is, once that happens, you'll always get to enjoy delays when enjoying your rights those agencies don't have any actual authority over in the first place.

Ain't America awesome?

No, it sucks

[ - ] TwoTone 0 points 3.6 yearsOct 12, 2021 09:49:59 ago (+0/-0)

It gets better! Just wait until the next time you fly after this happens.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 1 point 3.6 yearsOct 11, 2021 22:22:15 ago (+1/-0)

I've had it happen twice, and of course you never get a reason. My purchases were eventually approved, and there was no reason to deny them. Of course it's possible I'm on a secret list -- such is the nature of secret lists -- but nothing else has ever happened to make me suspect that.

I wouldn't read too much into it. The government is slow. There are a lot of requests.

[ - ] StealthNinjaTaliban 2 points 3.6 yearsOct 11, 2021 22:21:32 ago (+2/-0)

come back in 5 days. Happens to me every signle time.

[ - ] ModernGuilt 6 points 3.6 yearsOct 11, 2021 22:04:12 ago (+6/-0)

Of course you're on a watch list but the feds are praying to moloch that you actually go on a spree. Theyll give you the guns themselves if need be.

Prob just backed up, if they don't clear you in a couple days its an auto pass
