Because they were amongst the first settlers, and are why we have e.g. freedom of religion codified into 'our' Constitution. Most of the early jews were marranos (spanish term for cryptos) kicked out of Spain by the inquisition. Unfortunately, they were allowed to keep their wealth, and so you have e.g. the (((Vanderbilts))) (from Netherland, a Spanish territory stolen through the same outcast-yet-wealthy jews) living like miniature kings over here, owning swaths of land the size of medium-size states, with facsimiles of actual European castles posing as houses, etc.
