If we are talking securing the Mexican border ideally between 2,000 and 4,000 assuming a clear line of sight, flat land, and a need to guard only one side.
2,000 being enough to ensure every place is a place where bullets reach.
While im speaking from ignorance I would say ultimately its unlikely to take more than 10,000 even if vast quantities of people were suicidal.
