Heh. I once had to update a macbook for someone. During the installation the DVD drive made crunching noises and afterwards it wouldn't open. The update succeeded though. I read in the internet that the same update had broken multiple drives, and crapple stopped using installation disks in the later versions.

If someone has an old macbook laying around, install linux on it.

Yes, some computers (gets more common with newer systems) and macbooks have "secure boot" which will only allow certain OSs to run. It can usually be disabled, depends a bit.
