That would be cool. My dad has an off grid cabin. I want to bring it up to sustainability. This would be a cool project to add to it

Just to point out, you don't need running water to have hydro power. You can collect rainwater in an elevated tank then use the pressure difference between that and a lower tank to drive a waterwheel and an alternator. I think that's how this guy does it, looked like he was collecting meltwater in some videos.

It can also be used as a very cheap high capacity battery if you use something else to pump the water up to the elevated tank (like a windmill).

My own gut feeling is the whole issue was contrived, and that there has been a hoax / False Flag element at play since day 1.
