Classic feminine styling observations

Hi Needlestack and other TradWives

I've been tweaking my personal style over the past few months and thought I would share my results.

Before I started this, I wore a lot of pants, gym wear and tomboy clothes - leggings, bike shorts, band/concert tshirts, etc. I started noticing my peers at the playground , also wearing the same, compared to older women you might see at the grocery store, who are much more put together. Even my mom still dresses well to do chores, with blouses and slacks. I started to become self-conscious because bike shorts don't convey dignity and when you compare modern clothes with what our grandmothers wore, we may as well be wearing underwear. Modern fashion, just like everything else it seems, is a race to the bottom. We know this and we can do better, so I set out to update my style.

I started incorporating more skirts into my repertoire, still wearing tshirts but now with a high-waisted A-line instead of pants. I try not to wear pants unless I have a flowy blouse. The litmus test on whether my outfit is appropriate is if my grandmother saw me in it, would she approve?

It hasn't been long but I'm really enjoying the challenge. I love it when my husband comes home and says I look great. And I should look great, it's the least I can do when he has to look at sweaty beer gut guys at work. When I run errands, people are friendlier and nicer to me. I stand out. Skirts are cool and more forgiving than shorts. It sets a good example to my children, who I am also trying to dress more respectfully.

I'm still stumped on what to wear for getting dirty. An apron works in the kitchen but what about when you're cleaning or going to the gym? I don't want to sweat in my nice clothes or scrub the tub in a skirt.

Has anyone else started dressing more classically feminine? How is it working out?

If I'm home doing chores I just wear my casual clothes I don't mind getting dirty because they will wind up in the laundry along with everything else so don't feel like you have to dress up for your toilet!

One thing I've stepped up is wearing my favorite earrings and necklaces when I go out rather than keeping them on their hooks/in their containers looking pretty as if they're gallery pieces. They're meant to be worn and enjoyed and to decorate you!

Your husband is truly a lucky man.

When I lift, I dedicate my final reps to the cause.

I tell my wife to change into a T-shirt when cooking or something. Just yesterday she is making pasta in a nice new sweater and she got some sauce on it when she was eating. I'd much rather her just switch to a T-shirt at that point.

That happened one too many times for me. The final straw was a cup slipping in my hand and falling in the dishwater when I was doing dishes. So I bought a cute apron I would look forward to wearing which also has pockets. A t-shirt works too but I'm trying to bring back some old "hacks".

I have house dresses that I do chores in. They have pockets which makes them extra helpful. They're not so hideous that I can't wear them out, but they're cotton instead of a sleeker fabric.

I don't have recommendations on gym clothes, as my exercise routine is usually brisk walking a couple miles with the dogs while the kids ride bikes or skate, push-ups, planks and squats randomly throughout the day, and stretches at night in bed. I suppose if I had the desire to go to a gym I would look for Bermuda shorts that aren't tight fitting, and a blouse/t-shirt.

I'm glad you're enjoying the new attire. I've always hated wearing pants/shorts, dresses and skirts are so much more comfortable!

I'll have to look for house dresses at the thrift store next time.

My gym has childcare, which is a main reason why I go. I tried a running stroller and doing stuff at home, but the kids get excited and start climbing on me. I went yesterday and ended up wearing leggings and a tank that's almost dress length. But I thought of polo shirts and more retro tennis player type outfits, if I can pull it off.

I've always hated wearing pants/shorts

I still feel like I'm too exposed when wearing looser skirts, I'm so used to the feeling of pants. Just gotta get used to it, I guess.
