Apply flame-thrower, herbicide, and make a concrete floor. This will also help against the insects!

Also keep a flower hanged on a rope as to warn the other flowers not to come over.

I found a bunch dead at the beach the other day. I guess the fly over water and by the time they reach land again they're so exhausted they die.

Glad to see that. They're supposedly making a slow comeback due to people putting out flowers like you and planting milkweed. They say the Mexican Govt has tried to help in their winter refuge also. Remarkable creatures making an astounding migration each year.

They're awesome little critters. My wife's been really going out of her way to make sure a few dozen larvae survive. It's tough, because even with total protection, some of them just die in the metamorphosis stage, and she gets so broken hearted over them. But we have tons of milkweed on our property to the point where a bunch survive and emerge as butterflies that she didn't even find to move into the safe butterfly house that she has for them, keeping them safe from wasps and things.

The sunflower forest she planted was a cool idea; so many beautiful critters loved those, and now we have a ton of nice sunflower seeds.

I can't comment on the world at large, but every last speck of milkweed on my property was covered in caterpillars this season. The kids hatched out a ton in those butterfly tents.

Those are flowers and are common to gardens.
They are usually on land and not the sea.
