It's really more hassle than it's worth for regular use. Technically very impressive though. Worth checking out for fun, or if you have a specific purpose for it, but wouldn't recommend as a daily driver.
There have been some attempts to achieve similar things with containers instead of full virtualization, like SubgraphOS, but I'm not aware of any that have been successful or currently production ready.
Whonix is really close to ideal in terms of what you get out of it vs daily usability.
Kali Linux is a good OS for privacy. People use it for hacking and penetration testing but you can use it to remain somewhat private.
I'm not going to get too technical so you'll need some computer experience but if you're smart enough you can get this working. This is a brief tutorial If you need help you can message me and I'll try to help. I'm not a linux pro or anything but I got it all working myself.
Click 'download' then click 'virtual machines' then click vmware 64. If you have windows 10 or 7 use the 64 bit version if you have XP then I guess use the 32 bit versions.
Hover over resources. Under 'tools and training' click on 'products and downloads'. now scroll all the way down to 'VMWare Workstation Player" and click "download product". This will go to another page where you click "go to downloads" then the next page will let you download it. Click on "download now".
The next steps you might need to use a search engine like Startpage and search how to do them. Use the terminal emulator and run updates on kali.
Updating kali (read note below before starting): https://phoenixnap.com/kb/update-kali-linux On the above link where it says check source list use this command (they spelled 'sources' wrong): cat /etc/apt/sources.list Also use "sudo apt update" and "sudo apt upgrade" to get those working you need admin permissions.
ProxyChains allows to run any program through HTTP or SOCKS proxy. This tool forces all connections of given application to follow through user-defined list.
This isn't only for web browsing but any application you want.
Yeah, they are pretty bad. Older AMD's (before bulldozer I think) don't have PSP, they are getting expensive/hard to find. I don't know what kind of virtualization support ARM has.

Whonix is a purpose built OS, which you also run as a VM, and comes pre-configured to route all traffic through Tor. Just download, install, and go.
There's also Tails, which is similarly pre-configured, but intended to be run as a live OS from a flash drive or similar.
On the other end of extreme is Qubes, if you want to go full blown paranoid and run every application in its own virtualized sandbox.

3. Install VMWare.
4. Add the VM in VMWare: https://www.shaileshjha.com/how-to-install-kali-linux-in-vmware-player-vmware-tools/
The next steps you might need to use a search engine like Startpage and search how to do them. Use the terminal emulator and run updates on kali.

Also use "sudo apt update" and "sudo apt upgrade" to get those working you need admin permissions.
Tor+Proxychains: I used proxychains4 and not proxychains so you can install that and use it instead (step 6).
https://medium.com/cyberxerx/how-to-setup-proxychains-in-kali-linux-by-terminal-618e2039b663
5. Install Tor
6: Install Proxychains4: sudo apt install proxychains4

(enter password)
sudo service tor status
(checking that it's running)
proxychains firefox www.startpage.com
(this will oen up firefox an startpage. you can look in the terminal and see proxychains working)
search for DNS leak test on startpage
Check to make sure your IP and DNS has been changed.
Then you can go back into the terminal and hit ctrl-c and type:
