Getting the last word means you lost the argument.

Why does that matter? If you're not persuading anyone by your argument, it's pointless who gets the last word. "Winning an argument" means bringing someone who disagrees a little closer to your perspective by the strength of your argument, not by rhetoric and one-upsmanship.
