I have a very nice home theatre and for some reason i just unhooked it all and setup my old soundbar. Its not a normal soundbar, its old and was the best of the best back in the day (2007). Its actually better than almost all current soundbars. Its called a Yamaha sound projector. They have 2 woofers and 40 small speakers. They bounce sound beams off of the walls to create real surround sound. Its really cool and something you have to hear to believe. It also has a sub out so i can use my nice subwoofer with it. These sound projectors retailed at about $1000 back then. I'm just wondering why i hooked it back up because clearly my actual surround sound system is better. I think i just like the process and its kind of fun to switch out gear. Now when i put my other system back up it will be kind of special. I guess i just worked out why i did this. I will say the front sound field on the sound projector is more immersive than a simple L and R channel. The sound beams do a full sweep across the front, its hard to explain. Its impressive though. Go on your local Craigslist and look for a Yamaha sound projector or search "Yamaha YSP". You can find them now for next to nothing and they will destroy any modern high end soundbar with few exceptions. They are big, heavy and bulky though so don't expect a slim sleek bar. I really like home audio and change out my gear a lot. You can find such great deals on used speakers. Resale is really low. You can find $1000-$2000 speakers from 10-15 years ago for $100-$200 all day long and they will still be great. You can set up a really nice high end home theatre for $300-$500 and boy does it make movies fun. Nice for music as well. Most modern soundbars are awful. I tried LGs flagship $1500 Atmos soundbar and it was utter garbage. Tried a few others as well. The problem is you can't squeeze tiny drivers (speakers) into tiny slim enclosures and get good sound quality. It just doesn't work. Also the subwoofers they include with these expensive systems are cheap crap. They get away with this because most people are just switching from TV speakers so to them it sounds great.... it doesn't though. They are so overpriced. I haven't been overly impressed with Dolby Atmos in general. Not many movie soundtracks use it well but maybe it will get better. I really think old school 5.1 is 90% as good as any newer configuration. I always buy used gear. Actually what i do is buy, demo and sell it as a hobby. I get to toy around with new gear, try it out and i typically make a profit when i sell it. If i really like something i will run it for a while. I have some Definitive Technology bp8s I will never sell. They are the perfect home theatre speaker. I got a $1000 B&W center channel speaker at Goodwill for $40 a few months back. Its older but still, that was a killer score! You should consider setting yourself up a home theatre.
