I like my gaming laptop.

submitted by ghostofvoatspast to gaming 2.7 yearsSep 18, 2021 00:33:37 ago (+8/-4)     (gaming)

I wasn't sure how i was going to like it because I have always used desktops. As it turns out its great. Temps age good, performance is good, its quiet and looks neat. Its a mid range 3060/5800 and powers a QHD external monitor just fine. I can run games on max settings and maintain 60 fps, double that in many games but at least 60 in all games. I'm fine with 60fps at 1440p, I can't even really notice the difference going higher. Maybe if I played competitively it would be more apparent. I'd like to start gaming online with people but I don't really know how to go about doing that. I don't have any friends that game. I'm also not very good at fps and I believe people want to play with skilled gamers rather than casual gamers. I just finished cod wwII and it was really fun, beautiful game. Its impressive what they can do with these war sims now. I got a cooling pad today, they don't do much but I found it at Goodwill for $6.99 and its a good one so I figured why not. I've also raised the rear of the laptop to allow for better airflow through the bottom intakes. I never go above 75c on CPU or gpu while gaming which is impressive. I'd like to get a new game, do you have any suggestions? I like the RGB keyboard lights. I keep them on but have the laptop screen off since I'm using an external monitor. This monitor is very nice. Its a Korean brand and very high quality. I really think 1440p is the perfect resolution to provide great picture quality and good performance. I really think 4k on a PC monitor is unnecessary although nice if you have the power to run it. I was actually really surprised how well the 3060m can handle 1440p with great fps. I didn't think it would because its only 6gb of video ram. I guess that's plenty though.

Desktop prices suffer from inflation due to crypto, making laptops far more attractive these days.

Small, portable package. Lower price for comparable performance. Builtin UPS. What's not to like?

And with a thunderbolt cable sending all signals through one cable a laptop works great with a dock or a dock-monitor like Dell makes

Inflation is a persistent increase in prices, often triggered when demand for goods is greater than the available supply [...] Deflation, in contrast, is a widespread decline in prices [...]

An increase in prices "because of scarcity" is clearly an example of inflation. Not deflation.

It’s simple, both are an issue that work in tandem to fuck over people who want the product. Mining is the dumbest shit I’ve heard normies screech about in a while.

I think gaming is a waste of time.

hard to gauge entire effect because 'all work and no play makes..'

Gaming isn't all fun and games. There's simulations and education in gaming. They teach pilots how to fly and doctors how to operate. But go back to your dvd collection virtue signaling boomer.

Millenial here. Confirmed, I own 13 dvds.

Wait till the sound board goes out and you have to replace the whole system.

Today's midrange is well ahead of the bell curve on performance demand for most uses and games.

Your laptop is good enough for all but the highest resolutions in some of the most demanding titles, as well as super high end VR.

You're good for well over 99% of the current titles.

My travel laptop is an Ice Lake I7 with a mobile 2070 Super, and it'll push a Rift S and Vive Pro well. It chokes a bit with the Index and Pimax though.

So you think i could run VR with good performance? I have been curious about that.

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 18, 2021 04:13:17 ago (+0/-0)*

Yes, for sure. The more premium high res HMDs might pose an issue, but it will probably still push those at least on medium, maybe mid-high.

Might want to mention that I hope your laptop has the proper I/O for VR. There are plenty of gaming laptops out there where you really have to phinagle with hardware and software settings for it to work, depending on how the mini-display port (if present) is routed. Sometimes they're just outright incompatible, even if the box claims "VR Ready".

i will have to look. Its a Dell G15 5155 Ryzen Edition 3600/5800h.

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 18, 2021 22:58:16 ago (+0/-0)

Hm. That laptop lacks a mini-display, but does have HDMI (adapters should work, and some HMDs still use HDMI) and USB-C, which can also be adapted to what you need if it's routed right. On the Intel versions, it routes to the integrated graphics, which sucks. With the Ryzen model, it either integrates to the GPU or to nothing at all, very likely the latter.

I'd say it should work with most options, but take that with a grain of salt.

samsung galaxy 8 or 9 + a Samsung VR headset + riftcat = any pc is full wireless VR capable

[ - ] ghostofvoatspast [op] 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 18, 2021 20:55:14 ago (+0/-0)

cell phone vr is nothing like pcvr though

[ - ] toobaditworks 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 18, 2021 14:03:48 ago (+0/-0)

I had to mess with my USB settings in the device manager to keep them from going to sleep to get VR working right. Also I had to change the battery settings and mess with display settings for some games. Once you get it working it's worth the time spent. You might not have to change anything.

I run vr with a gtx 1060, 16gb ram, dual core 2.2ghz

I also underclocked my voltage using throttlestop which will help keep your laptop from over heating and makes games play faster.

I'm running undervolted and overclocked at the same time. I have also disabled boost on my cpu. My temps are amazing, around 65c during heavy gaming. Never goes over 75c.

I wonder how much closer you’d be to owning an acre of land if you hadn’t bought that…

It’s good to have some kind of release or escape from the world, but we all have work to do, please get your part for yourself taken care of.

[ - ] ghostofvoatspast [op] 1 point 2.7 yearsSep 18, 2021 20:52:32 ago (+1/-0)

Me? I literally own and live on over 230 acres of forested land.

awesome

If you’re being truthful that’s fantastic. Most people (even regulars here) focus on getting those sweet dopamine and serotonin hits and nothing else.

Only with the Cinders mod
Vanilla dark souls 3 is shittttt

[ - ] JesusDrowning 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 18, 2021 01:18:04 ago (+0/-0)

I thought about getting a gaming laptop, but never made the plunge. I like my pc for now, heh.

I highly recommend the dark souls series. You can start with dark souls 3 if you want better graphics. It's a semi-open world rpg with great fighting mechanics, immersive world exploration, interesting player interaction (you can summon other people to help you, and you can also be invaded by people who try to kill you as you progress through the game/area) and challenging boss fights. It does not hold your hand. Dark souls really respects the player and forces you to think and adapt in order to progress through the game. You will die a lot, but that's part of the dark souls experience. You should definitely watch some gameplay footage.

So.. i have to be online all the time?

[ - ] JesusDrowning 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 18, 2021 10:49:43 ago (+0/-0)

You can play offline. I prefer to play online for the player vs player though.
